In celebration of Pride Month, FDP Chair Nikki Fried released the following statement:
"As we celebrate Pride month, the LGBTQ+ community continues to be a target of bigotry, intolerance, and discrimination. "
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and an opportunity for the community to unite for justice and equity.
Dr. Jason Wysong has been selected to lead the Manatee County School system. He comes to Manatee after serving various leadership positions in the Seminole County Public School system for the last 16 years.
The June Manatee County Democratic Black Caucus meeting will feature
a screening of a 27-minute documentary that explores the history of Juneteenth.
As a Manatee County resident you must be aware of the social and political climate that dominates our lives and threatens our futures. If you are unhappy with the prevailing situations in our county, now is the moment to ask yourself some questions.
The Manatee County Democratic Party is calling for volunteers to join the organization as we prepare for the next election cycle of 2024. The Manatee Dems will help you find
the right fit and provide training.
Symbols of hatred, whether targeting race or religion, impact our community in a negative manner. The proposal to restore the monument honoring Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee represents another way in which systemic racism undermines the entire Manatee County community.
The granite obelisk this county commission wants to restore in front of the Historic
Courthouse is a divisive symbol of hatred. The monument was erected in 1924 during the Jim Crow era that subjected persons of color and certain non-Christians to overt racism, bigotry and discrimination.
Restoring this monument would be a daily reminder of the continued inferior social status and hatred this board assigns to African Americans and all people of color and non-Christian faiths.
This monument to Confederate sedition and societal racism is:
A divisive, racist symbol;
A waste of taxpayer money;
A distraction from the expectation that commissioners are working for all Manatee citizens;
And proof that this board is pushing extreme, conservative political agendas and promoting national culture war propaganda.
We call on this commission to do its job and uphold its pledge to voters. Govern in the best
interest of our citizens instead of engaging in distractions and racial disharmony.
